I have never been to Italy, so I can't really tell what's authentic or not, but seeing a banner claiming “2023 World Runner-up Pizza (Neapolitan Pizza)” hanging outside makes it seem quite impressive. This restaurant is Salto Pizzeria & Bistro, located in an alley near Yongchun MRT Station. It used to operate in an alley near the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall but moved to its current location a few years ago (No. 26, Lane 524, Section 5, Zhongxiao East Road, Xinyi District, Taipei City 110).
There aren’t many seats inside, so it's advisable to make a reservation. Even during lunchtime, there are many customers! Some even come alone—I saw a customer enjoying a glass of red wine and their meal by themselves at lunch. It looked so enviably leisurely, especially starting to drink at noon!
The service here is semi-self-serve; you need to get your own utensils and condiments (olive oil, chili oil, vinaigrette). Only the food is brought to the table by the staff. Orders are paid for first, and then the food is prepared. This might be due to a shortage of staff. As for the service attitude, let’s just say they have their pride. The response to questions doesn't feel very pleasant.
The mushroom soup is rich in flavor and tastes quite good, though the portion is a bit small.
The 2023 World Runner-up Pizza, the Neapolitan Pizza, is really unique—it's a flavor you won’t find elsewhere, as it's their own creation. They use homemade sausage and yellow chili peppers (these peppers are interesting, as they help cut through the richness). Overall, the pizza is well-balanced, with every ingredient standing out in the right way without overwhelming the others. You can taste each ingredient, and they blend together beautifully. Wood-fired pizza really depends on the chef's skill in managing the heat.
As for the pizza crust, everyone has their own preference, so you'll have to try it yourself to know. It’s completely different from American-style pizza, and each style has its own fans. Comparing prices and portion sizes isn't really convenient—whether it's worth it or not depends on what the diner thinks. Sometimes I feel like going, but I also have reasons not to go.
