In the past, most of the whiskey I drank was from foreign brands, primarily from Europe and the United States. In recent years, Taiwanese whiskey has gradually gained international recognition and market presence, particularly KAVALAN whiskey. Currently, when people think of Taiwanese whiskey, KAVALAN is the first brand that comes to mind, and there is no other local brand that can surpass it. KAVALAN has won numerous awards overseas, representing Taiwan on the international stage. Although it doesn't have the deep heritage and long history of several decades or centuries like some foreign distilleries, it has at least made significant strides and laid a solid foundation.
In recent years, I have intermittently tried quite a few bottles of KAVALAN, which was not the case in the past. When I used to visit liquor stores, I would first look at foreign whiskeys and never considered Taiwanese whiskey as an option. It was only after trying it that I realized its quality. I also heard that many Taiwanese businesspeople working in China have switched to drinking KAVALAN during gatherings. Those in the know understand that it is difficult to buy foreign liquor in China.
The map includes an overview of the entire factory, indicating which areas are open for tours, and most of these tours are free. Before the pandemic, more areas were open to the public, but some sections have remained closed since then. It's quite unfortunate, as visitors now miss out on seeing certain parts of the facility.
The tour introduces the whiskey-making process and explains how it is crafted from start to finish. Visitors can also see the equipment in operation. For whiskey enthusiasts, it is a great experience, providing insight into how the whiskey they enjoy is made.
On-site, staff are seen filling the whiskey into oak barrels.
In the area where the oak barrels are stored, one can imagine just how long the whiskey inside these barrels can be aged before it's ready to drink!
There's a building with a Mr. Brown Coffee on the second floor, and on the first floor, there's a tasting area and a distillery shop. The biggest issue is that if you want to do a tasting, someone in your group needs to be able to drive, and ideally, that person shouldn't like drinking. Otherwise, you'll have to buy the whiskey and take it home to enjoy. Additionally, the prices here are not more favorable than those at the KAVALAN whiskey specialty stores outside; they are the same.
