Gongzheng Baozi | A Must-Try Popular Delicacy in Hualien

When it comes to baozi in Hualien, almost everyone has heard of Gongzheng Baozi. In fact, it’s almost synonymous with the question of what to eat in Hualien. Before Gongzheng Baozi relocated, there was another famous establishment, Zhoujia Steamed Dumplings, right next door. The two seemed to have a deep connection, something the locals might understand better. For tourists like us, the only concern is whether it tastes good or not; the rest is not our priority.

In 2023, Gongzheng Baozi moved to 46 Ren'ai Street, right across from the renowned Miao Kou Black Tea. The reason behind this move is quite intriguing. Is it a powerful alliance or a showdown?

After relocating to the new location, the price remained unchanged at NTD $5 per baozi. Where else can you find such prices? You definitely won’t see that in Taipei. If there is such a place, please let me know—I’d love to go and try it!

This location doesn't actually have a high foot traffic in the evening, but the flow of customers never stops. We were worried we wouldn’t be able to buy any as we arrived past the closing time. Later, we asked a staff member who told us that they stay open until they sell out, so the posted business hours are just a reference. If they sell out early, they close early, and if not, they extend the closing time.

Their baozi dough is fluffy and slightly sweet, a bit thicker, with a somewhat lower filling-to-dough ratio. This means the outer dough is more prominent than the filling, but when eaten hot, it still has a juicy meat flavor. You can choose to dip it in sauce or not. Basically, you can finish one baozi in one bite, or at most two bites. Which one you prefer is a matter of personal taste, as its flavor is slightly different from that of another famous establishment.
