Culinary Delights at Nangang Houshanpi: Zhong Po Stinky Tofu (Yu Cheng 201 Stinky Tofu) and Thick Noodles with Pig Intestines

Anyone who has been to the swimming pool in Nangang's Yu Cheng Park for exercise surely has tried the two stalls selling large intestine noodles nearby. One used to be in front of the swimwear shop across the street (now moved to Alley 30, Lane 268, Fude Street), while the other was close to Exit 2 of the Houshanpi MRT station, next to the Quanlian supermarket. The Chung Po Stinky Tofu mentioned earlier is the one from that Quanlian supermarket alley, and it has relocated to the owner's doorstep to continue its business. Historically, this establishment has been around for at least thirty to forty years. When it disappeared from its original spot, many thought it had ceased operations.

It wasn't until someone posted about it on a Facebook group that people realized it was the same place from back then. Reflecting on the taste from the past, some wonder if it has changed. The owner is still easily recognizable, invoking memories of the past—the straightforward personality and the vivid recollection of many customers getting scolded by her. She isn't one to coddle customers and mostly manages the stall alone. Nowadays, her daughter comes to help after finishing work.

The main offerings here are stinky tofu and large intestine noodles. Other options like rice vermicelli soup, pork blood soup, pig stomach, intestines, and liver are based on personal preferences, and these ingredients also contribute to the broth of the rice vermicelli soup.

This set of guidelines is said to have been prompted by customers who were causing trouble, reaching a point where it became unbearable. The owner's daughter posted this notice directly!

The large pieces of pork blood are delightful to eat, offering a clean and sweet broth. There aren't overly complicated flavors; it's primarily a combination of broth and simple seasoning.

The owner proudly mentions her frequent oil changes, resulting in a more attractive frying color compared to others' darker shades. Additionally, the pickled vegetables are homemade Taiwanese-style. They're sweeter and less crispy, not quite to my taste. However, the stinky tofu is excellently fried, crispy outside and soft inside. A serving of stinky tofu and a bowl of soup make for a very satisfying afternoon snack (previously a late-night snack).

The silver chili pepper in the seasoning jar on the table is homemade by the owner and extremely spicy. Friends who can't handle spicy food should avoid trying it or, if they must, go easy on it and not add too much at once— take it step by step.

The ambiance is just like that; one can't expect too much. If you're particular about the environment, it might be best to avoid coming here. It's more about regular customers visiting, fostering everyone's memories. It's not the kind of place that wows people, but it's a simple, enduring nostalgia.
