One dish that you must have at least once a year is the Ginger Duck Hot Pot, a winter specialty in Taiwan known for its warming and nourishing properties. The only catch is that it's only available for half a year, making it challenging to satisfy your craving at other times. Unlike traditional hot pots, most of the ingredients are already cooked by the restaurant at the beginning. Only a few items need to be added by the diners themselves. Among the various versions, the classic Ginger Duck Hot Pot cooked over charcoal fire stands out as an all-time favorite, though not many places still use charcoal fire nowadays. This is because using charcoal involves some risks and requires proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Located on Xinyi Road, this "Bawei Ginger Duck Hot Pot" has been in business for several years, and its popularity peaks during the colder months. On rainy days, however, business may be affected as people tend to stay home. One major drawback is that the restaurant doesn't have air conditioning, making it quite uncomfortable during hot weather, especially with the close proximity to the charcoal fire.
The price has been slightly adjusted again; will it be the same price next year?
Before serving the hot pot, there is an additional step of pre-cooking certain ingredients that require more time to be heated thoroughly. The presence of charcoal fire mainly serves as a means of keeping the hot pot warm, and only quick-cooking items like vegetables are left for the customers to add themselves.
The interior space of the restaurant is not large, and it can accommodate up to 40 people at most when fully seated. Occasionally, you can also spot people bringing their foreign friends to dine here!
The Must-Order dish for hot pot is the Chinese flowering cabbage! It would be crazy not to order Chinese flowering cabbage when having hot pot.
The only staple dish in the Ginger Duck restaurant is the Sesame Oil Noodles. If these noodles don't taste good, it's quite hard to make up for it!
The rich and flavorful broth contains all the essence of the dish, and it would be a shame not to enjoy several bowls of it. Every time, I lose track of how many bowls I've had. It's essential to pair it with the soulful dipping sauce while savoring the tender duck meat. The warmth spreads throughout the body, driving away the chill of winter. Also, we almost always order a serving of small meatballs - thinking about it, we've tried almost everything except the offal. Haha! However, it's no problem for four people to share the meal.
